After gorging on far too much food and drink over Christmas and the New Year we headed to Horsey Gap, half way between Happisburgh and Caister on the Norfolk coastline. It’s always very bracing to walk along the beach and sand dunes. It’s a great way to clear out the holiday cobwebs. A visit to the Thursford CollectionThursford is best known for its famous Christmas Spectacular which I’m yet to visit but is widely hailed as a ‘must do’. It’s always widely praised and highly recommended. So I’m looking forward to experiencing the Christmas show at some point in the future.
A couple of months ago we paid a ‘regular’ visit to see the Thursford Collection to enjoy the usual attractions there. We enjoyed our afternoon there. The organs and steam engines are quite spectacular to children who have never seen the like before. A kind gentleman walks from one organ to another, playing a tune on each. The gondola ride is a magnificent experience, as are the carousels. Fungi hunting in Norfolk
One of my favourite locations is the woods at Blickling Park, where a huge range of Fungi can be found (if you look hard enough). But be quick. Fungi thrive best when the weather switches between damp and dry conditions. The recent foggy mornings and sunny afternoons have been perfect for Fungi. But as soon as the first Winter frosts arrive, that’s usually calls an end to the season.

Come to the Lantern Making Workshop at 4pm at the Holt Community Centre on Thursday 17 November 2011, ready to join the procession on the switch-on night. More information available here. There will be the usual events in the streets, yards and lanes of the town as detailed in the accompanying flyer and the spectacular firework display. The event is the culmination of many hours of volunteer effort and local business generosity, and it launches the six week spectacle that we are now known for nationally. To most this is seen as a ‘free’ event but in reality nothing in life is free. Many local businesses have contributed generously to ensure that we have our lights. If you plan to visit the event, the switch-on on the 23rd November, please consider making a donation towards the cost by dropping £2.00 for each member of your party into the official collection buckets. It’s hard to believe that only a couple of weekends ago I was still swimming in the blue, crystal clear, still waters of the sea at Sheringham. At last, the fabled Indian Summer finally turned up, even if somewhat fleetingly.
The sea had become so still that I managed to do some snorkelling near the lifeboat launch slope at Sheringham and discovered a sunken ship wreck, complete with lobsters and crabs scuttling around everywhere. It was quite magical… Book now for the 4 day Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend
Don’t forget to book now for the 4 day Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend in June 2012. To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the end of May bank holiday has been moved to the following week, Monday 4th June. An extra bank holiday has been added for the following day, Tuesday 5th June. So that’s 4 days off: Saturday 2nd June through to Tuesday 5th June. Many agencies and holiday cottage owners have already been quick to price the period as Peak period due to the likely high demand. But hunt around as there are still bargains to be had and not everyone has marked their prices up (yet). Swimming at East Runton in October?It’s been a fantastic end to the Summer here in Norfolk, as with many other parts of England. Bathers are still swimming in the sea and it’s only a month until Bonfire Night! Here’s a few photos taken down at East Runton beach on Sunday. The sea was a beautiful blue colour and almost crystal clear – perfect for snorkelling. East Runton’s a great beach. There’s plenty of sandy beach, especially at low tide when there are rock pools to be explored. And it’s only a short walk up the beach to Cromer Pier. It’s also very popular with canoe, kayak and dinghy fans.
Wells Christmas Tide – 25, 26 & 27 NovemberEarlier this month The Wells Carnival Committee once again contacted Father Christmas and asked him if, during his busy schedule, he could find time to visit us at Wells-next-the-Sea. Once again we are thrilled to announce that he has said YES!!!
As he travels from the ‘North Pole’ by boat to the Wells Christmas Tide event the day very much revolves around the tides with his estimated time of arrival in the harbour being late afternoon/early evening – (best to check our website for timings just in case it’s a choppy crossing and he is delayed). I first visited Pleasurewood Hills (10 mins south of Great Yarmouth) back in 1984 at the tender age of 14. The park had only recently opened and I was very disappointed. There were far fewer attractions and everything was geared towards younger children. Since then, the park has spectacularly evolved (read the Wikipedia article on Pleasurewood Hills for the full history). And, it still maintains its beautiful open spaces, as can be fully appreciated when riding on the 2 miniature railways. |

The 23rd November and once more the wonderful Christmas Lights in Holt will be switched on at 18.45 (note the new time), this year by Ed Parker the inspirational leader of the ‘Walking for the Wounded’ group which walked to the North Pole earlier this year.
